Old Town benches

Benches made possible by ‘partnership’

McALESTER — A McAlester business recently donated outdoor benches recently placed on North Main Street by the Old Town Association.

The OTA has been putting streetscape plans in place for the past year to renovate the business district and entice more people to spend time there, according to OTA officials.

Association member Kathy Wall said she approached Lowe’s management for assistance on how to get the project started.

“I wanted the Old Town Association to be able to achieve their goals,” Walls said.

“The Lowe’s manager was very approachable and said they were happy to help the community.”

Eddie Gray is president of OTA.

“I’m very proud of our volunteer base and the enthusiasm to improve the Old Town area,” Gray said.

“We have a lot of great people involved in our association that can make things happen,” he said.

“It takes someone with passion about a cause to see a project all the way through.”

Stephanie Giacomo, executive director of Pride in McAlester, also commented on the donation.

“This donation is an added bonus to Pride In McAlester’s Reuse-Recycle-Repurpose efforts.”

Giacomo said Lowe’s used leftover lumber from other projects to build the benches.

“We all need to join in the effort of recycling and repurposing materials for our continued future,” she said.

The McAlester Chamber of Commerce also shared in the in the “partnership with a local business who has reached out to help make McAlester a better place to live,” said Pamela Kirby, OTA member.

“There are several other projects coming up that will include some fresh paint and colorful plants,” Kirby said.

“We to remind you that the association is always looking for new members to share their talents with the projects.”

The OTA meets every third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Whistle Town Bistro, 2700 N. Main St.

“When you get a moment, take a drive to Old Town. Try out the new benches and enjoy the friendly atmosphere,” Kirby said.
