Sheriff: Human remains most likely prehistoric Native American

McALESTER —

Authorities say human skeletal discovered Monday on the shore of Lake Eufaula could be prehistoric Native American.
“An anthropologist from the Chief Medical Examiner’s office and an agent from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation excavated the skeletal remains late this morning,” said Pittsburg County Joel Kerns.
“They said the remains were most likely prehistoric American Indian,”
The remains including two skulls, several teeth, pelvic bones and other bones were reported to the Sheriff’s office Monday after they surfaced on an area of the lake which had been submerged prior to the recent drought, according to Pittsburg County Sheriff Joel Kerns.
He said the bones were found at the Oak Ridge Recreational area where Gaines Creek feeds into Lake Eufaula at U.S. Highway 69 and Oklahoma 9A.
The sheriff said the remains will be turned over to a Native American archeologist to determine what tribe they are from.
