Seniors man food drive

McALESTER — To help local food banks a group of senior volunteers is collecting canned food in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is seeking donations of non-perishable food items to give to local food banks, according to Marcia Mitchell director of the program.

“We are doing this in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” Mitchell said.

“After the holidays many of the local food banks are depleted and we want to help.”

The RSVP is a volunteer program that serves local communities with volunteers aged 55 and older, Mitchell said.

The program organizes seniors for different types of volunteer work at places such as the McAlester Regional Health Center, The Parents Club, Oklahoma Blood Institute, the Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.

“We have 287 volunteers in the four counties that I manage,” Mitchell said.

“We try to help the local community as much as we can.”

Meanwhile she said once the donated items are collected they will be given to food banks on Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

She said the donations may also be given to local soup kitchens and shelters depending on how much they receive.

For more information about donating or volunteering contact Mitchell at 918-423-3525 or email her at marcia.mitchell@kibois.org.
