Fire at Aldridge Senior Apartments causes $50,000 damage

McALESTER — FIrefighters say a fifth floor fire at the Aldridge Senior Apartments was caused by woman smoking a cigarette in bed.

“She caught the bed on fire which activated the sprinkler system in the bedroom,” said Brett Brewer McAlester Fire Chief.
The fire started Friday about 12 a.m. and although no one was hurt in the  blaze, the  damage to the building is estimated at $50,000, according to a MFD report.
“Thank God no one was injured,” said Yvonne Hubbard manager of the building.
More damage was caused by water from sprinklers than from the fire said Ronnie Cole, maintenance worker for the Aldridge.
“It was a mess,” Cole said.
“The water was like a lake running down the hall and dripping below. Water was coming out of the water intake for the air conditioners like a fountain.”
According to the MFD report the water ran from the fifth floor down to the bottom floor of the building.
Hubbard said although smoking is allowed she is looking at changing the policy.
