Asher man accused of murdering Stuart man

McALESTER — An man from Asher has been accused of murdering a man from Stuart.

Jerrod Murray, 18, was charged with first degree murder Friday in Pottawatomie County District Court. He is accused of fatally shooting Generro Sanchez, 18, of Stuart, in the head with a .40 caliber Springfield firearm, according to court records.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Travis Palmer, with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, was responding to a call regarding a body, with a gunshot wound to the head, found in a ditch near an abandoned truck, according to a police affidavit. While on his way to the alleged murder scene, Palmer saw Murray walking on the road, the affidavit continues.

Palmer ordered Murray to the ground and asked him if he had a gun, the affidavit states. Murray allegedly told Palmer that he didn’t have a gun, that it was in the truck, and that he was the man police were looking for.

“I ask(ed), ‘Why would I be looking for you?’ and he said, ‘Cause of the guy I shot and put in the ditch on Substation Road,’” Palmer’s affidavit states.

Police then arrested Murray and took him to the Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force office in Shawnee, according to the affidavit. When police interviewed Murray, the murder suspect allegedly told them that he had been planning to kill someone for three weeks. “He didn’t know who or when,” the affidavit states, but he knew where he planned to do it, on Substation Road, “cause he knew the area.”

Murray then allegedly told police that he decided to kill Sanchez because they were both students at East Central University and because Sanchez “didn’t have many friends and wouldn’t be missed so quick,” the affidavit states.

Murray allegedly told police that he would have killed the victim Tuesday, but Sanchez wasn’t in his dorm room, according to the affidavit. Murray allegedly told police that he offered Sanchez $20 to give him a ride to Walmart, the affidavit states. After the two got into Sanchez’s truck, Murray allegedly pulled a gun on Sanchez, the affidavit states.

Murray allegedly “told the victim to drive five miles north of Asher, he said the victim was begging for him not to kill him,” the affidavit continues. Murray allegedly told police that when they were driving east on Substation Road, Murray allegedly pointed the gun at Sanchez and shot, the affidavit states.

Murray allegedly told police that the shot missed Sanchez and shattered the window, according to the affidavit. Murray allegedly told police that he then shot again, this time hitting Sanchez in the right side of the head, the affidavit states.

Murray allegedly told police that he then jumped out of the truck and ran around to the driver’s side door, where he tried to open it and get the victim to fall out, the affidavit states. “But the truck rolled off the road a little up next to a tree,” the affidavit states, “so he then pushed (Sanchez) off on the ground and (Sanchez) was making a sound, so he didn’t know if he was dead, so he shot him in the head a second time and rolled (Sanchez) down into the ditch and cover(ed) him up with leaves and sticks.”

If convicted, Murray could be sentenced to death, life without parole or life in prison.
