McALESTER —
The Grand Avenue Community Center Inc. has ended its nominating period Thursday for board of directors positions for president, vice president, secretary and board members.
An election will be held at the center, at 918 E. Washington Ave., on Oct. 13 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Contact the Rev. Cecil Lee at 918-429-9670, the Rev. Anthony Washington at 918-426-1713 or Brenda Beed at 918-423-5685 to have a name placed on the ballot.
A community meeting will be held Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Paisley Hopper, the “dog”-ter of Debbie Hopper, is a Yorkie. Paisley recently won the American Cancer Society Relay for Life pet contest fundraiser. Paisley received a doggy gift card and gift basket and will appear in a commercial in June with the winners of the Relay for Life cutest kids contest. “Our pet contest raised over $4,000,” said organizer Valerie Lalli.

McAlester United wrapped up its spring 2013 season Saturday, with several of its teams competing at a coed soccer tournament in Eufaula. McAlester’s under-12 teams took first and second at Eufaula, and its U-8 girls’ took second.

Tornadoes and severe weather have torn through a large part of Oklahoma today (May 20,2013) and have devastated Moore south of Oklahoma City hitting two schools and Moore's hospital.
