McAlester police get bomb scare when executing search warrant

McALESTER — The McAlester police had a bomb scare recently when executing a search warrant in a McAlester home.

On March 16, McAlester police executed a search warrant in Larry D. Tannehill’s home, in the 700 block of East Crisler Avenue in McAlester. “Tannehill had been arrested prior to the execution of this search warrant on domestic assault charges,” a police affidavit states.

When officers entered Tannehill’s home, they “observed what appeared to be an explosive device in the living room floor,” the affidavit states. “The device is described as what appeared to be six sticks of dynamite wrapped toward each end with black electrical tape.” The affidavit also indicates the device appeared to have some sort of detonation with wires running from the dynamite to the detonation switch.

Officers immediately exited the residence and contacted the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Squad, the affidavit states. After examination of the alleged explosive, the bomb squad determined the device was simulated and “not operational in its present condition,” the affidavit states.

McAlester police then went back into the home and allegedly found numerous items associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamine. Police also allegedly found 100 grams of a white powder substance that field tested positive as methamphetamine, the affidavit states.

Tannehill was charged March 18 in Pittsburg County District Court with endeavoring to manufacture methamphetamine, trafficking in illegal drugs, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a simulated explosive device and misdemeanor unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also charged in a separate case with misdemeanor domestic abuse assault and battery.

Tannehill is no stranger to the Pittsburg County court system.

In 1995, Tannehill was accused of first degree murder in the March 5, 1995, death of 2-year-old Ryan Luke, the son of his girlfriend at the time, Wendy Luke. In that case, Tannehill was accused of fatally abusing the young boy. In May of 1996, a Pittsburg County jury found Tannehill not guilty after deliberating for seven hours and 15 minutes at the conclusion of the trial.

If convicted of recent charges brought against him, Tannehill is facing up to life in prison. In seeking comment, the News-Capital was unable to locate a working phone number where Tannehill could be reached.
