12-year-old McAlester boy hit by car

McALESTER — A 12-year-old McAlester child hit by a vehicle Thursday evening while riding a bicycle is doing well, his mother said Saturday.

“He got released from the hospital yesterday,” Crissy Blanton told the McAlester news-Capital Saturday of her son, Preston Harrison’s condition. “He has no broken bones.”

“He’s recovering really good,” Blanton said. “He’s up and walking around.”

At 4:58 p.m., McAlester Police Department was notified that a 12-year-old boy on a bicycle was hit by a car, McAlester Police Det. Capt. Gary Wansick said. The accident occurred at the intersection of 14th Street and Timber Lane in McAlester, Wansick said.

According to a police report, Harrison, was riding downhill and failed to stop before going through the intersection.

The driver of the vehicle, Donald Cravens, 52, of McAlester, did not have a stop sign at his side of the intersection. Once he saw Harrison riding through the intersection, Cravens attempted to stop but was unable to do so before hitting the boy, the reports states.

“The bicyclist was westbound on Timber Lane and entered the intersection of 14th and Timber Lane and that’s when the car and bicycle collided,” Wansick said.

When the two collided, Harrison “impacted the windshield” of Cravens vehicle.

Blanton said she is extremely thankful that her son wasn’t hurt worse. It could have been bad, she said, noting when her son hit the windshield, it shattered.

Wansick said police and emergency medical services responded to the incident. “McAlester Fire Department EMS took the child directly to the Eagle-Med pad along with the child’s mother,” Wansick said.

Blanton said Saturday that her son has been released from the hospital and is doing well. While her son has some slight bruising on his lung, she said he sustained no injuries worse than that in the accident.

“He was taken in the helicopter to St. Francis hospital in Tulsa,” Blanton said. “There wasn’t room for me to go with him.”

Blanton said the child’s grandfather lives in Tulsa and he was able to go to St. Francis and stay with Harrison until she had time enough to drive in and be with her son.
