Mercy Clinic reaches milestone

McALESTER — It’s been 20 years since the Mercy Clinic first opened its doors.

Some of those involved can hardy believetwo decades of providing free medical and limited dental assistance to those who might otherwise have a difficult time paying have already passed.

To mark the milestone, a small celebration is set for Wednesday — nothing fancy, probably just some punch and cake, according to those putting the event together.

It’s for the Mercy Clinic’s volunteers, and present and former patients, said Denise Lewis, treasurer for the Mercy Clinic.

It’s expected to be a come and go affair, from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., at the Pittsburg County Health Department, at 1400 E. College Ave.

Dr. Larry Lewis — who is married to Denise Lewis — proved the guding force is starting the Mercy Clinic. Today, approximately 18 volunteers, including other doctors, dentists, nurse practitioners, and other volunteers, help keep it going.

The Mercy Clinic is open every Wednesday from 4 until 7:30 p.m. at the health department. Appointments need to be made by phoning 918-246-4306 starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays only, according to Denise Lewis.

The Wednesday afternoon celebration is to recognize not only the volunteers and patients, but those who help to support the Mercy Clinic as well.

Oklahoma Star Estella Kirk, shows off some of the 2013 Miss McAlester Scholarship Pageant tickets that are now on sale. The event is scheduled for Sat. June 22 at 7 p.m. at the S. Arch Thompson Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at Chaney Harkins Funeral Home.
