Six candidates set for Tuesday night forum

McALESTER — Six candidates in three races are set to participate at tonight’s candidate forum at the Kiamichi Technology Center in McAlester.

The forum is set begin at 6 p.m. in KTC’s Seminar Center, on the southeast side of the campus.

Candidates for office in the District 2 U.S. representative’s race, the District 7 state Senate race and the Pittsburg County sheriff’s election are among those set to participate.

In addition to the candidate’s races, representatives from the city of McAlester are also set to speak and answer questions regarding the city’s two bond refinancing questions, which are also on the ballot for the Nov. 6 General Election.

McAlester News-Capital Publisher Amy Johns will moderate the forum, which is sponsored by the News-Capital and KTC. Questions will be asked by News-Capital Senior Editor James Beaty and Page Designer Brandy Brackett.

Candidates will be give an opportunity for two minute opening statements, followed by a question and answer period. Following the questions, candidates will then be given an opportunity for a two minute closing statement.

Candidates who have confirmed they will participate in the U.S. District 2 representative’s race are Democratic Rob Wallace, of Fort Gibson, and Independent candidate Michael Fulks, of Heavener. Republican candidate Markwayne Mullin , of Westville, opted to attend a campaign event in Idabel instead, according to his campaign.

The three candidates are seeking the Congressional seat currently held by District 2 U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, D-Muskogee, who decided not to seek re-election.

In the District 7 state Senate race, Democratic candidate J. Paul Lane, of McAlester, and Republican candidate Larry Boggs, of Red Oak, are vying for the state senate seat currently held by Richard Lerblance, D-Hartshorne. Lerblance, who would have been prevented by term limits from serving the full four-years in office if re-elected, opted not to file for the office this year.

Both candidates in the race for Pittsburg County Sheriff have confirmed they will participate. Incumbent Democratic Sheriff Joel Kerns is seeking a second four-year term in office, while Independent candidate Tracy Parrott, a former Pittsburg County deputy, is also seeking the sheriff’s post.
