Buffs golf seeks return to state tournament

McALESTER — When McAlester’s high school golf season kicks off Monday, it will do so with high hopes. The 2012 Buffaloes finished fourth at Regionals, qualifying for the 5A state tournament for the fourth consecutive year and finishing 12th.

Of the five Buffs bags to play last year, four return for the 2013 season. And because of that, Buffs fifth-year coach Chris Zike said he expects a return to State.

“As long as they continue working and getting better, they should be there,” Zike said Thursday.

While the very experienced Buffs have a decent shot at returning to the state tournament, the Lady Buffaloes’ road looks somewhat tougher. The Lady Buffs didn’t qualify out of Regionals last year, nor did they even finish in the top half.

“Last year — and this year for that matter — we were beginner golfers,” fifth-year Lady Buffs coach Caroline Miller said.

The Buffs open their season Monday at Ardmore at 8 a.m., while the Lady Buffs open their season Monday at Wagoner at 9 a.m.
