McAlester man gets prison time for making meth

McALESTER — A McAlester man was recently sentenced to do prison time for manufacturing methamphetamine.

Matthew Scott Ragan, 30, pleaded guilty Feb. 20 in Pittsburg County District Court in two separate cases and was sentenced to 23 years, with all but the first 10 years suspended.

In one case he pleaded guilty to manufacturing methamphetamine and in the other he pleaded guilty to second degree burglary. A charge of obstructing an officer was dismissed.

According to court records, McAlester police officer Kevin Bishop conducted a traffic stop on a black 2003 Chevy Impala in November. When Bishop approached the vehicle, he “could smell a strong chemical odor associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine was emitting from inside the vehicle,” a police affidavit states.

When police searched the vehicle, they allegedly found numerous items associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamine, according to the affidavit.

The driver of the vehicle, Sharon Ozelle Lemons, 24, of Hartshorne, and two passengers, Horace Dean Jr., 38, and Matthew Scott Ragan, 30, both of McAlester, were arrested and transported to the Pittsburg County jail.

All three were charged Nov. 26 in Pittsburg County District Court with manufacturing a controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine). Dean and Ragan were also charged with misdemeanor obstructing an officer.

On Feb. 20, Lemons pleaded guilty to an amended charge of possession of methamphetamine and was fined $700. Judgment and sentencing were deferred for five years.

Dean is due back in court March 23 to face charges. If convicted, is facing up to life in prison.
