McALESTER — The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma has opened its new satellite location on North Main Street.
The grand opening was Tuesday and McAlester Mayor Steve Harrison was there.
“We are happy to have them in McAlester,” Harrison said.
And although the bank has only been open a few days, Branch Manager Shane Snelling said they have already begun to provide food to one of their approved partner programs.
“We had our first customer yesterday,”Snelling said.
The bank serves only partner programs such as the soup kitchens, food pantries such as Shared Blessings and Hope House, he said.
The new McAlester location will service Pittsburg County as well as seven additional counties in the Food Bank’s service area in southeast Oklahoma. Those locations include Choctaw, Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain, McIntosh, Pittsburg and Pushmataha counties and a total of 78 current Partner Programs of the food bank.
The 8,100 square-foot facility, located at 2119 North Main Street in have 650 square-feet of combined cooler and freezer space, along with the current capacity to store 100,000 pounds of shelf-stable food,” Snelling said.
But he said he is still stocking his shelves.
On Thursday large bags of onions and other produce were stacked high in the middle of the room and fresh fruit was being stored in the large refrigerator.
And although the bank is not open to the general public, Snell said the public is welcome to make donations of food to be distributed to the organizations who provide for those in need.
