Girl Scout's begin cookie sale

McALESTER — Local Girl Scouts will be out selling cookies beginning this week, according to Devona Jackson leader of Brownie Troop 1758.

Jackson said her troop members are looking forward to selling cookies this year.

“If our girls sell 3,000 boxes they get an Ipad — among other things,” Jackson said.

The sales are cumulative so they get more than one prize based on the number sales, she said.

“We are really excited about the prizes this year, so we plan to work really hard.”

The Girl Scouts starting selling directly to the public on Saturday and booth sales will begin Feb. 15 and continue until March 17.

And Jackson said all six of the Girl Scout cookie favorites will be back again including Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils and Savannah Smiles. The cost is $4 a box and the proceeds from sales are broken down like this:

— $.50 goes to the troop for program activities, travel opportunities and community service projects.

— $.30 is reserved for the individual girl as Cookie Credit — girls can use this credit for activities like resident camp, day camp and travel opportunities and they can also purchase uniforms, pins, patches and camping supplies and fees.

— The remaining proceeds stay in the council to underwrite program activities, train adult volunteers, maintain facilities and fund the Girl Scout’s financial   assistance program, according to gseok.org.

Last year the girls sold one million boxes, said Rashonda Hutchings of the McAlester area Girl Scout Council.

“This year we want to beat that,” Hutchings said.
