OSP death row inmate dies of natural causes

McALESTER — A death row inmate at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary died Friday at the prison of what officials believe was natural causes.

Karl L. Myers, 64, was housed on OSP’s medical unit when security personnel found him unresponsive. “Security and medical staff responded,” said OSP Warden’s Assistant Terry Crenshaw. “The offender was pronounced deceased.”

Myers was sentenced to death on May 19, 1998, after being convicted of first degree murder in Rogers County. He began serving time at OSP on June 1, 1998. Prior to receiving his death sentence, Myers was convicted of assault with intent to commit rape in May of 1979, a crime for which he served nearly six years of a 20 year sentence. In February of 1969, Myers was convicted of burglary and served one year of a two-year sentence.
