Line workers re-energizing city's south side

McALESTER — Workers from Mississippi have been helping Public Service Company of Oklahoma get a line on setting up a new electrical feeder system for the south side of the city.

On Monday, line workers on cranes were busy on both sides of South Main Street, also known as U.S. Business 69, near Renegar Animal Hospital.

At one point, workers stopped traffic going in both directions as a severed line dropped onto the street.

It’s all part of a project to relocate the main electrical feeder system at South Street from its present site to a new location, approximately another quarter-mile south, to the area across the street from Renegar Animal Hospital.

That’s according to Micah Burdge, supervisor of Customer Design for Public Service Co. of Oklahoma.

The current feeder system stretches mainly behind existing businesses in the area, including T. H. Rogers Lumber Co. and Walls, according to Burdge.

“It’s back behind those businesses,” Burdge said. “It’s difficult to get to in the event of an outage.” Part of the feeder system is in a wooded area difficult to reach with service trucks, he said.

The new work will move the feeder line from behind those businesses, on the east side of South Main Street, to the west side of the street.

“In the event of an outage, I will be able to get our trucks in there” and do the needed repairs, Burdge said. The idea is to accelerate the time when power can be restored in case of an electrical outage.

“Hopefully, we will be able to get the power back on much more quickly in the event of an emergency,” Burdge said.

So far, no PSO customers have been without power because of the ongoing work, he said.
