Special elections — Savanna

Poll places open for $475k bond issue

McALESTER — Voters in the Savanna School District were going to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots on a $475,000 school bond issue, designed to cover several projects.

All regular polling places in the school district were set to remain open until 7 tonight so voters could cast ballots on the measure. Savanna School Superintendent Gary Reeder said passing the bond package will allow for a number of improvements at the school.

One of the projects regards what is called the “new” gym — which was built in 1965, Reeder said. “We have to replace the floor and the roof,” he said. The gym project also includes a score board and seating, he added.

“In the field house, we’d be replacing flooring, exterior doors, plumbing fixtures and lighting,” Reeder said. New mirrors in the weight room, primarily used to make sure weights are being lifted properly, are also needed, the superintendent said. “We also need a scoreboard for the baseball field,” Reeder said.

The package also includes replacing the visitor bleachers at the Savanna football field, he said. An important part of the package has to do with upgrading technology, the Savanna superintendent said. “We’re upgrading the fiber network school-wide and increasing the band width from 1.3 to 10 megabytes,” Reeder said. With the current system, the school is not capable of providing all of the state tests that will be required, he said.

“The other part includes computers and hardware, whatever we need school-wide,” Reeder said. If the measure passes, the bonds would be in effect for five years, the superintendent said.

All of the plans are included in the single bond package, so voters in the Savanna School District will be casting ballots on one proposition.

Reeder said all of the projects are important to Savanna Public Schools. “These are not ‘wants.’ They are all ‘needs,’” Reeder said. Contact James Beaty at jbeaty@mcalesternews.com.
