Gun rights activists take it to the streets

McALESTER — Several gun rights activists held signs and waved at cars while standing in front of the Carl Albert Federal Building and Courthouse on Saturday.

The Carl Albert Federal buiding at 301 E. Carl Albert Pkwy. McAlester.

“We support the second amendment,” said Lonnie Lu Anderson, organizer of the event.

Anderson said she organized the event as president of the Pittsburg County Republican Woman’s Association.

The group of male and female activists stood holding signs with slogans such as “Hands off my Guns” and “Today our guns — tomorrow our?”

Saturday’s event took place as activists across the county took part in the National Day of Resistance Rally to oppose legislation proposed in December 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Col, according to dayofresistance.com.

In January President Obama signed four major legislative proposals and 23 executive actions for gun control measures, along with several additional proposals to Congress, according to wsj.com.

The proposals to Congress include a federal assault weapons ban.

The National Rifle Association has denounced Obama's proposals. The opposition to Obama's proposals focused on his decision to enact gun reforms through executive order instead of legislation, according to nra.org.

Meanwhile, Anderson said Saturday’s event in front of the courthouse was a success.

“We’ve had lots of support on this issue,” Anderson said.

“We want to the let the president know we don’t want our rights taken away.”
