WILBURTON — Seven members of the Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP for Success team and Eastern’s grant manager joined more than 1,300 GEAR UP professionals from across the nation as they attended the 2013 NCCEP/GEAR UP Capacity–Building Workshop in Las Vegas, Feb. 2-7.

The workshop is designed to help new and experienced GEAR UP professionals effectively meet their project goals and objectives through professional development and strategic planning activities. The Capacity–Building Workshop is coordinated by the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) and is planned in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education.

The conference began with Eastern’s team members holding a team meeting to discuss conference strategies and desired outcomes.

The opening general session began with the Valley High School ROTC Color Guard presenting the nation’s colors and Tyrone Cooper, a GEAR UP graduate, singing the national anthem.

NCCEP Executive Director Nathan R. Monell, CAE, addressed the audience throughout the conference. Attendees from across the nation meet to hone their grant implementation practices. In addition to the numerous workshops, opportunities were available for networking with colleagues.

Team members also participated in roundtable discussions including Working with Rural Schools; Summer Enrichment Programs, Implementing the 7th Year; Parent Engagement, GEAR UP Evaluation; and Youth Services, GEAR UP Alumni Leadership Academy, and Higher Education Authorization. GEAR UP Director Linda Morgan also attended the NCCEP/GEAR UP Advisory Commission Meeting.

The Eastern team also attended Documenting the Match and the Annual Performance Report.

GEAR UP team members attending were Project Director Linda Morgan; Project Office Manager Helen Scott; Professional Development Coordinator Debbie Walters; Education Coordinators Michelle Cardell, Kamy Patterson and Melissa Juarez; and Data Entry Clerk Tamra Tilley. Eastern Oklahoma State Grants Manager Chassey Kirk also attended.

In 2011, Eastern received a seven–year, $12.6 million federal GEAR UP grant and is in its second year of implementation.
