OSP inmate found unresponsive; declared dead

McALESTER — ead Monday after he was found unresponsive at the maximum-security prison in McAlester, according to prison officials.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections was withholding the deceased offender’s name early Monday, pending notification of next of kin.

At approximately 6:35 a.m. Monday, security personnel in OSP’s H Unit noted the offender was unresponsive, said OSP’s Warden’s Assistant Terry Crenshaw. Prison security and medical staff responded, and it was determined that the offender was deceased, Crenshaw said.

The offender did not have a cell partner at the time of his death, according to Crenshaw.

Crenshaw said the exact cause of death was unknown as of early Monday. Prison personnel have notified the state Medical Examiner’s office, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death, he said.

Although the offender’s name was withheld, he was 55 years old and was serving time on first-degree murder conviction from a Cleveland County, Crenshaw said. He had arrived at OSP in April 2010.
