OSP inmate pleads guilty to beating fellow inmate to death

McALESTER — An Oklahoma State Penitentiary inmate pleaded guilty recently to charges accusing him of beating a fellow inmate to death.

Jeremy L. Lyons, 27, pleaded guilty March 1 in Pittsburg County District Court to one felony count of first degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to 18 years, with the last 10 years suspended, to be served consecutively to his current prison sentence. He was also fined $765.

On July 20, 2009, Lyons beat to death fellow inmate Blake A. Ford, 23, “by kicking and hitting (him) in the head, face and body,” court records state. The two were cellmates at the time Ford died. OSP Warden’s Assistant Terry Crenshaw previously told the News-Capital that Lyons was found standing over Ford with his foot placed on Ford’s head.

At the time of his death, Ford was serving prison time for multiple Oklahoma County convictions, including auto theft, possession of firearms, assault and threatening states witness. Ford was set to be released April 25, 2018.

Lyons remains in custody at OSP and is currently serving a 35-year sentence for second degree murder and a 40-year sentence for convictions of possession of narcotics in jail and assault with a dangerous weapon. Prior to the manslaughter conviction, Lyons was set to be released April 10, 2045, and has a parole hearing scheduled in September 2032.
