McALESTER —
City of McAlester employees from several different departments were laid off from their jobs Wednesday.
“We ended up laying off a total of seven people,” McAlester City Manager Pete Stasiak said late Wednesday afternoon.
Asked if any more layoffs of city employees were expected at this time, Stasiak said none were. He said he’s not looking at furloughs of city employees at this point.
“I feel we have stabilized the city,” Stasiak said. The city manager said he acted in response to a $1.23 million budget shortfall for the current fiscal year, which extends until June 30.
All of the laid-off workers were notified Wednesday, Stasiak said.
None of the laid-off employees were from the city’s fire or police departments.
“We are focused on maintaining the services to the community and the safety of the community,” Stasiak said.
Three of the workers were from the city’s Utility Maintenance Department, which is the department which handles repairs in water breaks and sewer lines, Stasiak said.
Another laid-off employee worked in fleet maintenance; one worked in parks, another in recreation and another was a maintenance worker at the Southeast Expo Center, the city manager said.
Stasiak termed the job losses as “lay-offs with termination.”
“We told them they’re all eligible for re-hire should the economy turn around,” Stasiak said.
The city is expected to get its next major revenue report when it receives its Oklahoma Tax Commission disbursement for sales tax collections, due in April.
