Talking trash?

A battle with plenty of trash talk

McALESTER —

The Battle of Gowen Mountain Recycling Challenge and The Great American Clean-up has begun in Hartshorne, and Haileyville.

The Twin Cities are up against Wilburton and Red Oak in a recycling competition. Simply bring your recyclable material to the blue recycling bins located outside of Haileyville City Hall and Hartshorne Elementary School until March 24, said Regina Peoples member of the Hartshorne-Haileyville Chamber of Commerce.

Peoples said the competition started March 11. “The town with the most recyclables wins,” Peoples said.Recyclable materials include paper, plastics 1, 2 and 5, tin/aluminum cans, Styrofoam and cardboard.”

She said on March 23, volunteers are encouraged to meet at 9 a.m. at the Hartshorne City Hall where they will break into groups to clean up litter in the area. She said doughnuts and drinks would be served to those volunteering. Bring us your trash!

In an email to the McAlester News-Capital, Peoples said, “The Great American Cleanup™ will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shiloh Building, located next to the high school baseball field at the Industrial Park.”

She said, “This is an opportunity to dispose of household trash and bulk waste responsibly.

“We will also be accepting electronics and tires,” she said. “Unfortunately, we will not be accepting brush or hazardous material. This event is free and open to the public.”
