BIg paint project helps Eagle Scout earn his wings

McALESTER — McAlester High School sophomore Nick Santine recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

A member of Boy Scout troop 499, Nick said he started as a Cub Scout in the first grade.
He said his parents, Jada and Clem Santine have been a big encouragement.
“My parents are very well rounded and they help me alot,” Nick said.
For his Eagle Scout project, he did some painting.
“I painted the stands at the Mike Deak Field,” he said. “It took a full Saturday.”
Nick is an honor student. His favorite suject is math, he’s in Algebra 2 and he said and he also plays the trombone and the keyboard in MHS Marching Band.
He also performs at the Liberty Theater in Hartshorne where he sings in country and variety shows. He said he also maintains a small garage band where he plays keyboard and is the lead singer.“We play Guns and Roses, Elton John and Cold Play,” Nick said. He said Cold Play is his favorite.
He’s been playing the piano since the age of 8 and said he’s thankful he stayed with it. He’s currently working Clair De Lune by Claude Debussy.
Nick said his days are busy.
He gave an example of a typical Tuesday which he said starts at 6 a.m.
“I have to be at band practice by 7 then I go throught the school day. After school, I go to mock trial from 5 to 6 p.m. and after that he goes to the Liberty Theater for rehearsal.
He said one of his favorite parts of scouting is attending the National Boy Scout Jamborees and the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
He said he attended 2010
National Boy Scout jamboree and celebrated the 100th anniversary of scouting with 46,000 others scouts and that was fun but he said his stay at the Philmont Ranch was amazing.
“It’s the Disneyland of scouting,” he said. While there, he said he back-packed with his troop for 10 days and covered 70 miles. “We did mountian climbing and river rafting.”He said he also got to race donkeys. Nick laughed as he talked about the race. “My donkey decided he didn’t want to race and took off into the trees,” he said.
His next goal is to attend the 2013 Boy Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Virginia.
