Mullin to hold town hall meeting in McAlester

McALESTER — New U.S. District 2 Congressman Markwayne Mullin, R-Westville, is including a stop in McAlester on his current tour of cities in the Second Congressional District.

Mullin is set to be in McAlester for a town hall meeting Friday at the Kiamichi Technology Center. The meeting is set to begin at 9 a.m. inside the KTC’s Seminar Center, which is on the south side of the building.

This will be Mullin’s second town hall meeting in McAlester since he won election, but will be his first since being sworn into office. Mullin held a town hall meeting at the McAlester Public Library in December, after he won election to the post in November, but prior to his being sworn into office in January.

“I’ve said from the very beginning that no one would outwork us and I meant it,” Mullin said in a statement issued from his Washington office regarding his current town hall meeting tour. “We want to be very proactive to stay in contact with the district. I’m committed to doing town hall events often so there can be a constant line of communication available,” he said. “We want to be able to visit with as many people as possible as often as possible. I’m looking forward to a busy travel schedule during the week and I want to encourage members of the public to attend and ask questions.”

Mullin, who carried all 26 counties in the district in the Nov. 6 election, said during his December stop in McAlester that “People start treating you different” after you win election to Congress.

He spoke of how, during a two week orientation session in Washington, party leaders had separated the Democrats and Republicans almost immediately. “We didn’t do anything together,” Mullin said. “We didn’t eat together. We didn’t go to meetings together.” Mullin said he never even saw a Democrat in the same rest room as a Republican.

He said he couldn’t resist getting on a bus with the members of the Democratic party at one point during the orientation events. Before the ride ended, some progress had been made in reaching across the aisle, according to Mullin.

The congressman’s stop in McAlester is his first one of the day for Friday. From McAlester, Mullin plans to travel to Atoka for an 11:30 a.m. meeting at the KTC facility in Atoka.

That’s to be followed by a meeting in Antlers at 1:30 p.m., one in Hugo at 3:30 p.m. and another in Durant at 6 p.m. Contact James Beaty at jbeaty@mcalesternews.com.
