Commissioners OK safety awards

McALESTER — On Monday Pittsburg County commissioners approved $36,250 worth of safety awards to be given to county employees.

The commissioners met Monday for their regular meeting at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

Yearly safety awards of $250 each are given to county employees who are not involved in a reportable work accident, according to Kevin Smith District 2 commissioner.

Trent Myers Pittsburg County safety coordinator said county wide “on-the-job” accidents have been cut in half from the previous year.

“We have been really looking close at the accident reports and finding where we can make changes so that employees are not repeating the same injuries,” Myers said.

He said one example was at the Pittsburg County Animal Shelter where employee injury reports have been lowered more than 50 percent.

“The employees at the animal shelter are careful now to wear protective gear, which has really helped keep the injuries down,” Myers said.

Also attending Monday’s meeting was Commission Chairman and District 3 Commissioner Ronnie Young and District 1 Commissioner Gene Rogers.

Pittsburg County Commissioners meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse. The meetings are open to the public.
