Save Our Water invites public to free presentation

McALESTER — A public presentation on how the oil and gas industry is engaged “in the environmentally responsible development of unconventional resources,” is set for Jan. 17 in Eufaula.

The presentation will be hosted by the Save Our Water organization, according to Don Edgar publicist for the group.

He said Darren Smith manager of Environmental Policy at Devon Energy will give a presentation 8 a.m. on Jan. 17 at the First United Methodist Church, 220 S. Main, Eufaula.

Edgar said Smith will provide a fact-based presentation on the shale revolution and how the oil and gas industry is engaged in the “environmentally responsible development of these unconventional resources.”

The presentation will address a number of questions related to oil and natural gas exploration and production operations in Oklahoma, Edgar said.

“He will define unconventional oil and gas production,” he said.

He said Smith will explain how new applications of existing technology allow the industry to produce new energy resources that were not accessible a decade ago.

During the presentation, Smith also will highlight water management practices that are focused on conservation and protection of natural resources.

Smith will also discuss Devon’s efforts to reuse water and the disposal of wastewater and the regulations in place to ensure the safety of the practice, according to Edgar.

In 2005 the Save Our Water group was organized in reaction to a permit the Oklahoma Water Resources Board granted to the Rural Development Foundation which would have allowed them to draw out a maximum of 72,000,000 gallons of water daily from Lake Eufaula, according to the organizations website, saveourwatereufaula.com.

The OWRB turned down RDF's request for an extension on the permit on November 7, 2005.

However because group and any other group can re-apply for a permit such as this at anytime, so the organization was started to organize citizens and keep them informed, according to the website.

Meanwhile Edgar said Save Our Water meets at the church every month on the  third Thursday at 8 a.m. and the public is encouraged to attend.
