Pink means free Lady Mountaineers tickets on Monday

WILBURTON — Real Lady Mountaineer fans wear pink.

Eastern Oklahoma State College basketball fans can substitute their blue and gold for pink attire and receive free admission to the Lady Mountaineers basketball game on Monday. The Lady Mountaineers will take on Redlands Community College at 6 p.m.

All cancer survivors and family members of those who have lost loved ones to the disease will be recognized at halftime of the women’s game.

“We’re honored to raise awareness and support the fight against breast cancer, a terrible disease that has personally touched so many of our lives,” Eastern head basketball coach Amber Taylor said. “We hold this game dear to our hearts because it is about so much more than basketball. I hope it serves as a reminder for women about the importance of getting screened and early detection.”

Basketball teams across the nation will wear pink and have similar recognitions during games from Feb. 8-18 for the Play 4Kay initiative. The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association started the initiative, originally called Pink Zone, in 2007 to raise awareness during games played in February.

Since its inception, the initiative has raised more than $2 million to support women’s cancer research. Donations for the imitative will be accepted at the Eastern game.

The program is named in honor of former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach Kay Yow. She passed away in 2009 after her third bout with breast cancer.
