Gundy names Yurcich as offensive coordinator via Twitter

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy named Mike Yurcich as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach via Twitter on Thursday.

“Proud to announce Mike Yurcich as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at #okstate,” Gundy’s said in a tweet.

Yurcich, 37, spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Shippensburg, Pa. University. His previous coaching stops included Edinboro University from 2006-2010, where he served as offensive coordinator while coaching quarterbacks and receivers.

He also spent a year as a graduate assistant at the University of Indiana, his only experience at the FBS level, and served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Saint Francis University in Indiana.

Yurcich will hopefully bring some stability to the offensive coordinator position at Oklahoma State. He will be the third OC in four years, following Dana Holgorsen and most recently Todd Monken, both of which left OSU to take head coaching jobs at the Division I level.

Yurcich helped re-write the record books at Shippensburg. His first team set school records for points, touchdowns, total plays, first downs and total offense. Last year’s offense at Shippensburg led the NCAA Division II in total offense (529.2 yards per game), and was second nationally in scoring (46.9 points per game) and passing offense (387.7 yards per game) during an 11-2 season.

“Coach Yurcich has 14 years of experience coaching quarterbacks and a thorough background in the passing game,” Gundy said. “He has been a very successful offensive coordinator for many years.

“He played quarterback and has been a student of the position as well as a student of offensive football for 14 years. He will be in place immediately to start getting prepared for spring football.”

Yurcich is a 1999 graduate of California (Pa.) University. He spent three seasons as the school’s starting quarterback. He began his playing career at Mount Union College.

“Joining the program at Oklahoma State is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family,” Yurcich said. “I am excited to continue the offensive firepower that has been in place at OSU for many years. I’ve often admired the OSU system and I’m looking forward to learning and then teaching the Oklahoma State offense.”

Yurcich and the Cowboys will open spring drills on March 11.
