Crowder man pleads in DUI injury case

McALESTER — A Crowder man recently pleaded guilty in a DUI case that involved the injury of another.

Elbert Bruce Bernard, 37, was originally charged Nov. 26 in Pittsburg County District Court with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 or more and causing great bodily injury.

According to court records, Bernard was driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol on Aug. 10.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, Bernard was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 69 near Canadian when his vehicle veered off the road, hit a ditch, completely rolled over, went through a barb wire fence and then finally came to rest upright.

Both Bernard, and his passenger, 19-year-old Kristen French, of Canadian, were transported by medical helicopter to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa where they were listed in critical condition, according to Wesley’s report.

French was discharged from the hospital after being there for five days, according to a spokesperson from St. John’s.

When French was discharged, Bernard was being treated in the Neurological Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Tulsa hospital, according to a St. John’s spokesperson.

The felony case against Bernard was dismissed Jan. 4 and on that same day he was charged with DUI in a misdemeanor case. On the day he was charged with misdemeanor DUI, Bernard pleaded guilty and judgment and sentencing were deferred for one year. He was fined $680 and ordered to complete DUI school.
