Thunder at 4 p.m.: Fans asked to help with food drive

NORMAN — One of the mandates the Thunder organization has had since it came to Oklahoma is to be deeply involved with the community.

The players and coaches have done everything from going to speak at schools to holding camps during the summer.

The Thunder will take part in Gov. Mary Fallin’s “Feeding Oklahoma Food and Fund Drive,” and fans attending the Thunder vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game Sunday are encouraged to drop off donations before the game.

The donation drive will kick off the team’s annual Holiday Assist initiative.

Fans may deliver donations of non-perishable food items, such as canned goods, peanut butter and pasta, before the game to either of two tents on Reno Avenue, stationed near the northwest and northeast entrances of Chesapeake Energy Arena. Volunteers will begin collecting items at 3 p.m., during the Thunder Alley pregame festivities.

Any fan who donates to the drive can enter a raffle to win Thunder prizes, including team-signed balls, player-autographed shoes and tickets to an upcoming Thunder home game.

The donation drive will conclude when the game tips off at 6 p.m.

Homeland will match the donations that the Thunder collects on Sunday, doubling the impact of each fan’s contribution to battling hunger.

“The Thunder has enjoyed tremendous support from our community, and – especially as we approach the winter months and the holiday season – we are inspired to give back to benefit those in need around us,” said Dan Mahoney, vice president of Community Relations for the Thunder. “Our fans have always helped fuel our tradition of community service. Sunday’s food drive is a direct way for our fans to share in that spirit and show their support, both for the Thunder and for some of their neighbors who need a helping hand.”
