Shinn on game day: Second quarter likely pivotal

NORMAN — It might take a few series for everything to settle in, but there will be a pivotal quarter in today's Oklahoma-Baylor game.

The second quarter is when the Sooners have tended to dominate opponents this season. They've outscored then 109-35 during that period.

The reason that quarter will likely have a huge impact today is the Bears have actually been outscored 104-88 in the second quarter of games. It is the only quarter where the Bears typically gets outscored by opponents.

The Sooners have a negative quarter, too. They've been outscored 68-64 in the fourth quarter this season. Some of that's been due to having backup players in. However, OU's starters couldn't keep pace with Kansas State or Notre Dame in those pivotal losses.

Based on the way the Sooners and Bears have played through the first eight games, the second quarter is when OU has a chance to pull away.
