Okla. court stops conspiracy count in bribery case

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has rejected an attempt by Oklahoma County prosecutors to add a conspiracy count against two former state lawmakers charged with bribery.

The appeals court handed down the ruling Wednesday in the case of former Rep. Randy Terrill of Moore and former Sen. Debbe Leftwich of Oklahoma City.

Prosecutors allege that Terrill and Leftwich schemed to set Leftwich up in a state job so a Republican colleague of Terrill’s could run for her open seat. Special Judge Stephen Alcorn ruled in November 2011 that there was sufficient evidence to try them on felony bribery charges but rejected prosecutors’ request that they also be tried for conspiracy.

District Attorney David Prater says the ruling will allow his office to move forward in the bribery case.
