McAlester man gets federal prison sentence for meth charge

McALESTER — A McAlester man recently received a federal prison sentence for a methamphetamine related drug charge.

Mauro Medrano-Romero, also known as Mauno, age 40, pleaded guilty in April to a federal charge of drug conspiracy, according to a press release from the Eastern District of Oklahoma U.S. Attorney’s office. On Tuesday, he received a non-parolable 135-month sentence, to be served in a designated federal prison, the release states.

According to the press release, Medrano-Romero was indicted in November of 2011 after an investigation by the McAlester Police Department, the Krebs Police Department, the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

“The indictment alleged that beginning in or about March 2010, and continuing until on or about Aug. 3, 2011, ... (Medrano-Romero) did knowingly and intentionally combine, conspire, confederate and agree with others to knowingly and intentionally possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance,” the press release states.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Shannon Henson represented the United States in the case and Ronald A. White, district judge in the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, presided over the hearing.

Medrano-Romero will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to the designated federal prison at which he will serve his sentence, according to the release. He was unavailable for comment.
