Farmers, ranchers unsure of House farm bill

OKLAHOMA CITY — Wheat farmers and cattle ranchers in Oklahoma and rice growers in Arkansas say they’re generally unsure about a proposed farm bill passed by the U.S. House Agriculture Committee.

The committee sent the bill to the House three weeks after the Senate passed its version of the half-trillion-dollar bill. The current farm bill expires in September.

Oklahoma wheat farmer David Gammill of Chattanooga said he hasn’t reviewed the bill. Arkansas rice farmer Jim Butler of Harrisburg said preservation of a price support program in the House version is an improvement over the Senate bill that eliminated price supports.

Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association director Scott Dewald said he believes lawmakers are still a “long way” from agreement.

The Agricultural Council of Arkansas says members are pleased the measure includes a safety-net for farmers.
