Texas man convicted of bringing drugs, cell phones into JBCC

McALESTER — A Texas man was recently convicted of bringing drugs and cell phones into the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center in McAlester.

Alejandro Diaz, 18, pleaded guilty Aug. 24 in Pittsburg County District Court to charges of possession of cell phone or electronic device in penal institution and bringing contraband (drugs) into a penal institution.

Diaz was fined $1,100 and sentenced to five years, with all but the first 120 days suspended.

In May, the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office released photos that were taken after Diaz attempted to smuggle the items into JBCC.

“The McAlester Police Department arrived at the same time we did,” said Pittsburg County Undersheriff Richard Bedford. “They were a great help.”

According to the incident report, Diaz, of McKinney, Texas, entered the JBCC property with 12 cell phones, 10 cell phone chargers and 14.5 ounces of a “green leafy substance.”

“All of the items were packaged and wrapped in black tape,” Bedford said.
