McAlester golfer dominates in Texas

GOLF | Fernandez has hit two hole-in-ones, the first, freshman year at the McAlester Country Club

McAlester golfer Casey Fernandez leads competition today by 9-strokes and adds another hole-in-one to his resume.

Fernandez, a junior at McAlester High School, completed the second round of the Texas-Oklahoma Junior Open Tuesday after shooting a hole-in-one on the 11th hole at Wichita Falls County Club Wichita Falls, Texas.

“I hit a pretty good shot when I teed off, I felt the moment carry the ball,” Fernandez said. “I knew that it had a chance to get close after I hit the ball, then it landed on the green and disappeared. I didn’t think (it went in) because of a ridge that was on the green, I thought it rolled down the ridge. Some team members checked on it and told me my ball had went in.”

After disbelief and having his mother who had been following him verify the lost ball, Fernandez, realized he sank his second hole-in-one of his career and began celebrating.

The first hole-in-one, Fernandez’s freshman year with the McAlester Buffaloes, was he hit off the first tee box at the McAlester Country Club during a qualifying round.

Fernandez now sits as the leader in the Boys 16-year old Division which teed off today at 1 p.m. He was 9-strokes ahead of Oklahoma Christian School golfer Jackson Ogle, who shot a 76 Tuesday.

Fernandez was 2-over par after completion of the front nine then picked up his game playing the back nine. A hole-in-one and a few birdies later, Fernandez completed the second day shooting 68. The hole-in-one was a 183 yard par-3.
