The 12th Annual Junior Sunbelt kicked off officially Thursday evening with a banquet at the Southeast Expo Center.
This years Sunbelt brought a fine collection of baseball fans from all across the United States and Canada.
The players were reminded of how important the Sunbelt is as they further their careers in baseball.
Representatives of each team introduced their coaches and players and then went on to tell about the large number of players that went on to receive scholarships.
The coaches really got the players attention when they told of the many former Sunbelt participants that are now playing professional baseball.
Former and longtime Arkansas Razorbacks head baseball coach Norm DeBriyn was the guest speaker at the event.
DeBriyn is also a scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
DeBriyn’s spoke of the large number of players he recruited to play for the University of Arkansas, from Oklahoma.
“We recruited several of our top players from Oklahoma,” Debriyn said. “When we, ( the Razorbacks ), made our first college world series appearance, several of our starting players were from Oklahoma.
Debriyn went on to give the players strong words of encouragement on staying focused and playing with 100 percent when they play the game.
“All of you players obviously have talent to be chosen for these teams. What can give you the edge is being the guy that hustles after each ground out, plays hard and never gets down on himself.”
DeBriyn closed out his speech with the words he used to motivate his Razorback team before they took the field.
“Hit em’ and go get em’, slide on both sides and cover the out field like the early morning dew.”
