The Hartshorne Miners took on the Panama Razorbacks in a homecoming football game Friday. Panama traveled well with a large turnout — more than rival Wilburton — when they came to Hartshorne.
The scoring started early with the Miners as the benefactors. Hartshorne’s runnig back CJ Nelson, put the first points on the board with help from quarterback Mario Hardin on a 56-yard touchdown pass.
The next score was Caleb Collins, who caught a pass from Hardin in the end zone from 36-yards out. The score was, 13-0, after the PAT was failed.
Hardin locked up a 19-point lead in the third quarter form a 67-yard touchdown run. The shutout was prevented late in the third quarter with a pass from David Shirey of the Razorbacks, to receiver James Sisco. After a solid defensive effort on the PAT, the third quarter ended 19-6 with the Miners in the driver’s seat.
The only other score was Hardin to Collins again for their seventh touchdown hookup of the season. That endzone penetration put Hartshorne on top by 19 points after another failed PAT.
Momentum-crushing sacks from Hartshorne’s Kenneth Simpson, Joe Morgan and Byron Bailey-Morgan helped keep the Razorbacks scoreless in the first half. The hit parade on Panama’s quarterback Shirey continued with Dwayne Terry and Garret Grivette of the Miners’ D putting the field general on his back in the second half.
The defenses won out for the rest of the contest as the game ended, 25-6.
Head Coach Bill E. Williams spoke after the game about the setbacks the Miners faced with all the injuries they’ve had to overcome in saying, “Nobody ever remembers how you come into these things but everyone remembers how you leave. We’ve had to play the last two weeks with seven starters injured, but these kids bounced back well [from last week’s loss to Valliant] and we’ll take the win out of this one for their efforts.”
The Miners left for their homecoming dance winners and with a record of 6-2 and undefeated at Butler-Jennings Field. The Miners travel to Spiro Friday.
