Casper officials offer smart party tips for Super Sunday

Even if your favorite team isn’t playing in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon, chances are you’ll be watching Super Bowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 40 percent of traffic deaths are connected to drunk driving on Super Bowl Sunday. On typical days, 31 percent of traffic deaths are connected to drunk driving.

“If you go to a party or a bar for the Super Bowl, have a safe ride home,” Pam Evert, director of the Safe Communities/Safe Kids program at Wyoming Medical Center, said in a media release.

“Natrona County residents have some extra help when they have been drinking,” Evert said. “The Tipsy Taxi Program offers free taxi rides from any bar or restaurant in Natrona County to drivers who are impaired.”

If you attend a Super Bowl party or watch the game at a sports bar or restaurant:

Designate your sober driver before the party begins.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast.

Pace yourself.

Eat plenty of food, take breaks and alternate with nonalcoholic drinks.

If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend or family member to come get you; or stay where you are for the night.

Use the Tipsy Taxi Service by asking the bartender to call for a free ride.

If you host a Super Bowl Party:

Make sure all of your guests designate their sober drivers in advance.

Serve plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages at the party.

Keep the phone numbers of local cab companies on hand and take the keys away from anyone who is thinking of driving drunk.

Remember that you can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you served is in a drunk driving crash. If an underage person drinks and drives, the parent may be legally liable for any damage or injury caused by the underage driver.

    “I’m really excited for D.J. It’s been a long process, but fortunately he’s been cleared to practice,” OU coach Bob Stoops said after Tuesday’s practice. “He has to spend two days in just helmets. So he couldn’t do much. But he did fundamental work in learning the defense.”
    The two practices Ward will spend without pads come prior to OU’s annual Red/White Spring Game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Owen Field.
