With national signing day just a little over three weeks away, two of Oklahoma’s best recruits of the past 12 years were honored by USA Today.
Running back Adrian Peterson (2003) and defensive tackle Tommie Harris (2000) were both named the newspaper’s 30th Anniversary ALL-USA team. USA Today has been a prep All-American team since it was founded in 1982.
A debate can be waged of Peterson being the best running back in OU is history, but there’s no doubt he’s had the best NFL career of any Sooner ball carrier. The 2004 Heisman Trophy runner up as a true freshman, rushed 2,097 yards this past season, nine yards short of the NFL single-season record. He was also named to his fifth Pro Bowl in six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
Harris, who retired from the NFL after the 2011 season, started every game as a true freshman in 2001. He was a consensus All-American in 2002 and 2003 along with winning the Lombardi Award in his final season.
The Chicago Bears selected Harris 15th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. Harris was the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in his rookie season and was named to Pro Bowl teams in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
