Buffs fall to Ada in season opener

The McAlester Buffaloes baseball team completed their season opener Tuesday in Ada against the Cougars.

The rivalry bled out 11 innings into a pitching dual that dropped the Buffs with 2-1 loss to the Cougars.

According to McAlester Head Coach Jackie Cumbie, the weather “cooled down a lot as soon as the sun dropped.”

The Buffaloes missed an opportunity to close the game out in the bottom of the seventh inning by a “perfect throw” from an Ada outfielder, according to Cumbie.

McAlester’s Matt Mason pitched nine innings, allowed one run, three hits and struck out 12 batters.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t scratch in more runs for Mason,” Cumbie said. “We had an opportunity twice at home, one in the fifth and one in the bottom of the seventh. Both runners were thrown out at home. The outfielders just made perfect throws.”

The winning pitcher for Ada was Tyler Carter. He pitched nine innings, allowed seven hits and had 10 strikeouts.

Ada scored a two-out RBI single in the first inning that made the score 1-0.

McAlester scored after a single from Josh Denato in the bottom of the fifth inning. Denato advanced to second base off a wild pitch then made it home on an error by the Cougars first baseman, from a Tyler Crabtree hit.

The Buffs Clint Redding followed Mason in the pitching battery in the 10th inning. Crabtree was behind the plate.

The Buffs will travel to Durant to play in the Durant Festival Friday and Saturday.

McAlester is scheduled to play Bottom, TX at 3:30 p.m. and against Edmond, Sante Fe at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

The Buffaloes’ third game is scheduled Saturday, 11 a.m. against Edmond Memorial.

The proposed site for the mosque is acceptable.
The proposed site for the mosque is too close to ground zero and should be changed.
