William Gay Early Childhood Center hosts family literacy nights
William Gay Early Childhood Center recently held their spring literacy night. The night highlighted several "Pete the Cat" books written and illustrated by James Dean and Eric Litwin. The students , along with their families, participated in the story time and the "Pete the Cat" activities. Pictured are kindergarten student Allie Wright, with her grandparents Fred and Socorro Barnett and brother Bishop Wright.

Education goals stress keyboarding - not cursive
A new set of national standards don’t require children to learn how to read and write in cursive. They do, however, require students demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills by the end of fourth grade.

Cursive writing at risk in U.S. schools
Cursive writing is fading from American society thanks to the ubiquitous computer keyboard. Longhand's advocates also blame education standards introduced by the National Governors Association and now adopted by 45 states. Debates over dropping cursive from school curricula pit teachers against teachers, and stoke a fear among historians that we are raising a generation of handwriting illiterates.

Seven Pittsburg County schools receive state honors
Governor Mary Fallin, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi, Former Governor Brad Henry and State Legislators honored 186 school districts with the Governor’s ACE Award at a celebratory luncheon on March 3 at the Oklahoma History Center.
