Kirkhart gets scholarship

Dr. William C. Culp, M.D. and his family of Little Rock, Arkansas, have chosen Hannah Kirkhart as the recipient of the Irma Combs Culp Scholarship.

Kirkhart not only excels in rigorous academic pursuits but also in citizenship and music. She is a four-year member of the McAlester High School Band and also a member of the National Honor Society. She was recently named valedictorian of her senior class and has been a member of the Oklahoma All-State Band three consecutive years. She plans to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas where she will be an English major. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Kerry Kirkhart.

Irma Combs Culp, Dr. William C. Culp’s mother, was valedictorian of the McAlester High School senior class of 1921. She was one of the founders of the local honor society, the Meda Club, which eventually became a chapter of the National Honor Society. She was also class historian. She participated in chorus and orchestra as well as drama and extra-curricular activities in piano and organ. After studying piano in France, she returned to McAlester and was organist at Grand Avenue Methodist Church for almost 50 years. She and her husband, C. K., were owners of Culp Piano Company for over 50 years.
