BOARD OF EDUCATION: Jefferson Elementary represents in spite of flu

McALESTER — A full house fell silent to Jefferson Elementary students as they lead the pledge and sang happily in spite a large number of students abscent due to flu.

The Jefferson students lead the Pledge of Allegiance, then sang “America the Beautiful” and “Skinamarinky dinky dink” at McAlester Public Schools Board of Education meeting Monday evening.

Monthly, the board of education invites an MPS school to attend and represent their student population with presentations or displays of school talent.

Bringing in a crowd of more than 50, Jefferson Elementary represented their fellow students. However, Jefferson Elementary Principal Stacie Fryer announced that approximately 25 percent of the school’s student body had been absent with flu and illness.

Fryer said Jefferson is taking all precautions by focusing on concentrated cleaning and sterilization.

Deputy Superintendent Ronald Martin said Jefferson Elementary has been the most effected by the flu and illness so far this season.

Before the meeting started, a teacher was heard telling students to sing extra loud and strong to make up for the absence of fellow classmates that could not attend due to illness and the children obliged.

Fryer said a teacher who had planned to attend the meeting was out ill as well and she said the teacher was disappointed she could not be their with her students.

After Jefferson students finished, special guest McAlester High School student Cody Ward stood and played two songs on his clarinet.

Ward will be featured on The Today’s Show playing in the chair he earned in a national honors band.

Superintendent Marsha Gore congratulated Ward on his achievements and said that she would put the MHS band against any other.

She said she is very proud of the band program here in McAlester.

The McAlester Public Schools Board of Education meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Old McAlester High School at 200 E. Adams Ave.

These meetings are open to the public.
