McAlester Varsity Pom Squad and their coach, Penny Oss, recently attended the Universal Dance Association Pom Camp in Springfield, Mo., at the Missouri State University campus.
The girls spent four days working hard and participating in camp activities and competing against other squads from the area. The squad won Super Spirit Stick on the first night of camp, Spirit Stick daily and finished first place Superior in Home Routine and the Team Full Out Award.
The girls won numerous individual blue ribbons during camp routines and evaluations, with at least 50 gold ribbons for Drill Down routines.
The senior squad members were eligible to compete as UDA All Americans. Those competing and receiving this award were Maggie Homer, Erica Higgins, Kayla Denike, Kimberly Timmons, Kayla Quisenberry, and Carly James.
These girls received medals and are eligible to march in UDA parades in Rome, Italy on Jan. 1, 2011, or the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City or a Houston Texas Parade.
UDA Staff also recommended the following members to audition for UDA staff positions: Maggie Homer, Brooke Adcock, Carly James and Kayla Quisenberry. Try outs will be held at a later date.
In addition, the squad has qualified to go to UDA Nationals in Orlando Florida in Feb. 2011. They will be having a golf tournament fundraiser at Arrowhead Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 21.
Members of the 2010-11 squad attending camp include senior captains Kayla Quisenberry and Brooke Adcock; senior co-captain Maggie Homer; seniors Erica Higgins, Carly James, Kayla Denike, and Kimberly Timmons; juniors Hunter Graham, Jill Hundley, Hailey Hyden and Chandler Davy; sophomores Taylor Horne and Katie Sams; freshmen Taylor Burmeier, Sarah Sams, Kyndle Souther, Kaylee Harvanek and Cambrea Lott. Senior co-captain Alexis Banks was unable to attend this year as she was competing in the National Miss Teenage Pageant in Philadelphia, in which she placed third.

Lt. Gov. Lamb lauds region for Work Ready Certification
Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb stopped by the Kiamichi Technology Center in McAlester on Friday to help celebrate the teaming of 15 Southeastern Oklahoma counties as Oklahoma’s Premier Certified Work Ready Region.

Nancy Downing, left, presents Tylor Zane Killingsworth, with a Five Hundred Dollar Scholarship by the Kilihoti Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution. His entry was chosen as the winner from the thirty-one applications received from graduating seniors from area high schools.
Zane attended Checotah High School and was one of six valedictorians in the Class of 2012. He was a member of the Student Council, the National Honor Society, State Honor Society, Member of the Business Professionals of America, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a delegate to Boys State. He was also a contender at the State Power Life Meet in 2011 and 2012, and member of the Checotah football team. Zane is also active in his church and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Checotah.

Krebs resident Jeremy D. Lalli has earned a bachelor’s degree in applied ministry: pastoral from Oklahoma Baptist University.
