Inmate dies at OSP; death unexplained

McALESTER — An inmate at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester died Sunday evening, according to prison officials.

Mark A. Stacey, 43, was found unresponsive in his cell by security staff at the prison at 6:55 p.m. on Sunday.

“Security and medical staff responded,” said OSP Warden’s Assistant Terry Crenshaw. “The offender was pronounced deceased at 7:20 p.m.”

Stacey was housed on the prison’s A-Unit, Crenshaw said. He was serving time at OSP for a drug conviction out of Oklahoma County, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website.

“The incident is currently being investigated by the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Internal Affairs Unit,” Crenshaw said. “Offender Stacey did have a cell partner. Early indications show no apparent trauma or wounds to the deceased.”

Crenshaw said Stacey’s cause of death is unknown at this time and will be determined by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s office.

“No staff injuries were reported during this incident,” Crenshaw said.

Stacey had been incarcerated on and off with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections since March of 1994, according to the website. He began serving his latest term in March 2010 and, according to Crenshaw, began serving time at OSP in November 2011.

He was scheduled to be released from custody in June 2019 and had a parole hearing scheduled in June 2013.
