Crowder man charged with DUI, injury

McALESTER — A Crowder man was recently accused of injuring a woman while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Elbert Bruce Bernard, 37, was charged Monday (Nov. 26) in Pittsburg County District Court with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 or more and causing great bodily injury.

According to court records, Bernard was allegedly driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol on Aug. 10.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, Bernard was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 69 near Canadian when his vehicle veered off the road, hit a ditch, completely rolled over, went through a barb wire fence and then finally came to rest upright.

Both Bernard, and his passenger, 19-year-old Kristen French, of Canadian, were transported by medical helicopter to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa where they were listed in critical condition, according to Wesley’s report.

French was discharged from the hospital after being there for five days, according to a spokesperson from St. John’s.

When French was discharged, Bernard was being treated in the Neurological Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Tulsa hospital, according to a St. John’s spokesperson.

If convicted, he is facing up to $5,000 in fines and up to five years incarceration. In seeking comment, a working phone number for Bernard could not be located.
