McALESTER —
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Southeast District Community Corrections (SEDCC), District Office located in McAlester, will join Probation, Parole and Community Corrections agencies from across the nation and Canada in observing Probation, Parole and Community Supervision Week beginning July 15 and ending July 21.
On any night of the week, Southeast District CC Probation and Parole Officers can be found throughout the community checking on offenders in their homes, enforcing court orders and ultimately holding offenders accountable.
Under the leadership of Michael Dunkle, District Supervisor, SEDCC is using this milestone to reinvigorate community partnerships at the state and local levels.
Southeast District CC employs 40 Probation and Parole Officers who are responsible for providing supervision services to 3319 adult offenders residing within the district’s 22 county area which is comprising all of the southeast quarter of the State of Oklahoma. Supervision area runs from Interstate 40 to the Texas border; and from the Arkansas border to Interstate 35.
These forty committed men and women collaborate every day with a wide range of rehabilitative and public safety agencies statewide. Although SEDCC has been affected by the downturn in the economy, and with budget shortfalls, this challenge means that Probation and Parole Officers must be creative in finding solutions to making sure those offenders they supervise have the support needed to find jobs, housing and treatment. By collaborating with community leaders and other resources, many officers are making a difference while faced with expanding caseloads and additional responsibilities.
Public safety is of first concern while ensuring there are reduced undue costs to the taxpayers of Oklahoma, as well successfully working to reduce the number of offenders who recidivate and are sentenced and returned to incarceration. But more importantly, to produce a higher ratio of offenders who conduct productive non-criminal lifestyles once released from their supervision.
Members of our community are encouraged to join together during Probation, Parole & Community Supervision Week to honor your local Probation and Parole Officers who work to make our communities a safer place to live. For additional information about Probation, Parole & Community Supervision Week, please contact Joe Hankins, Probation and Parole Officer IV/PIO, at Southeast District CC, 903 N. West Street, at 918-302-3110.
