McALESTER —
Charges of kidnapping and assault were dismissed Monday in Pittsburg County District Court for a McAlester man after the alleged victim failed to appear in court.
Taner Jeorge Maxey, 28, was charged late last year with kidnapping and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. According to court records, Maxey had been accused of keeping a man hostage in his home on West Apache Avenue by holding a three-foot sword to the man’s neck and hitting him in the head with a nail bar.
The alleged victim, David Canon, called police from Maxey’s home and informed the dispatcher that he was being attacked. Canon informed police that he had been drinking with Maxey in his apartment when Maxey “pulled a big sward on him and told him he couldn’t leave,” a police affidavit states.
But when it came time to show up in court regarding the incident, Canon failed to appear, court documents state. Maxey’s case was dismissed Monday and, on that same day, he was released from custody. Maxey had been incarcerated at the Pittsburg County Jail since Dec. 14 and was being held in lieu of a $200,000 bond.
